Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Tuesday, alleged that extensive illegal sand mining across the state is significantly disrupting the ecological balance and damaging waterways. Adhikari stated he has lodged a formal complaint about these activities with the Union Ministry of Environment. He quoted Union Minister Bhupender Yadav as assuring him that "his ministry would look into the matter and take necessary steps."
Adhikari further claimed that this sand mining is a "syndicated business run by TMC leaders across the state," which he says is causing ecological imbalance and disrupting rivers' natural courses while harming India's waterways. He also asserted that "the sand mafia are openly violating the laws framed by the Ministry of Environment." This complaint to the central government highlights concerns about environmental regulations and enforcement in West Bengal. The allegations point to a potential large-scale operation that could have long-term environmental consequences, including altering riverine ecosystems and impacting infrastructure.
